From Mrs. Donaldson:
"Biology completed a lab today called "Murder and a Meal." We used chemical indicators to check for the presence of macromolecules in the 'stomach contents' of our victim to solve our murder mystery."
We may have some future forensic detectives in our midst!!!
Mrs Shoop (2nd Grade) has been keeping word work engaging this week! Students had to roll cubes for onset (beginning letter)and rime (ending letter pattern). They had to write and read their letter pattern and decide if they had created a real word or nonsense word. Other students worked independently with support from our high school TA! GR8 work, Tigers!
Ms. Treuner (2nd Grade) covered a lot of skills during her guided reading group time! Students worked with letter tiles for word work, read a story, completed a five finger retell, and even used some special reading tools. They segmented sounds with magnetic chips and scooped up the word with a "magic" wand! Students waiting for their turn at the table completed independent reading activities on their chromebooks.
Mrs. Sleeper, our Title 1 teacher, has been working hard with Mrs. Hammers to support teachers with our new testing system. They have put in countless hours learning about the new STAR assessments, testing students, analyzing beginning of the year data, deciding on interventions for various students, setting individual student goals, and developing reading plans as needed. Mrs. Sleeper is already using her expertise in phonemic awareness and phonics to support students.
From Mr. Taylor:
"My students are writing a "news story" about the Neolithic Age--many fascinating stories!"
Ms. Kelley was utilizing a variety of strategies with her beginning readers yesterday. A fan favorite was the enlarged "Scrabble-like" Blending Board! She pointed to each tile and said the sounds with students. Then, she slid her hand across the word as students read the word! GR8 modeling!
Mrs. Davis and her high school TA were able to work with individual students while the other students did some work on their chromebooks today.
Mrs. Thompson's 4th graders have amazing independent reading stamina!!!
Mrs. Hilt's 3rd graders had a great discussion about their nonfiction book during guided reading today while other students read independently. The highlight of the small group time was a super engaging activity with syllables and index cards! They liked it so much that they asked to do it twice! It was all hands on deck!
Mrs. Lamar's Kinders were working with letters, sounds, and words (real and nonsense) at the small group reading table today while other students were reading with stuffed animals and working with letters independently!
Mrs. Piscopo's Kinders practiced so many foundational reading skills in small groups and reading centers today!

Do you wonder what the teachers are doing on Mondays? This Monday our JH/HS teachers took part in learning about characteristics of dyslexia and how to better help our students. Thank you Crystal Eldrid for your expertise and passion for this topic!
